An undulating landscape, with large wide drainage lines cutting their way through the lowveld savanna’s and Mopane woodlands. This is the best way to describe the Timbavati private nature reserve in the greater Kruger national Park.

The Timbavati Nature Reserve is probably my favourite reserve in South Africa. The predator density is lower than the other famous lowveld reserve, the Sabi Sands, but it has another aura to it. I have never left the Timbavati Nature Reserve disappointed by the Wildlife I have seen there. The Lion numbers are slightly lower, but this has opened the space for other predators to fill the void. Leopards have done particularly well in the Timbavati, and the Spotted Hyena clans have swelled as the natural balance is kept in check. The Timbavati Nature Reserve has also become one of my favourite places to look for African Wild dogs, which have used the Timbavati Nature Reserve for denning sites over the last few years. This is a direct result of the slightly lower Lion numbers in the area, as the packs feel that it’s safer for the pups without the extra risk of Lions.

The extremely relaxed nature of the game, allows for some interesting photography. This was shot at midday! ISO 640, f14, 1/3200sec
Spotted Hyena ISO 3200, f13, 1/160sec
Leopard, ISO 5600, f4.0, 1/125sec

This doesn’t mean that there are no Lions on the Timbavati Nature Reserve, the reserve shot to fame for producing natural White Lions, as the recessive gene resides in 2 of the prides on the Timbavati Nature Reserve. This added to a strong Elephant, Buffalo and Rhino population and a very good mix of general game (Giraffe, Zebra, Impala, Kudu and Nyala).

The Timbavati always has surprises and I can’t wait to see what surprises are in store for the next  safari in 2023.

I have a set date in 2023.

12- 16 May 2023
